鄧肯結雖然是自由結的一種，不過它的打法並不是把金屬配件和釣線直接連在一起，而是打的比較鬆，好讓線和路亞與大型毛鉤等保持幾公分的距離。也就是所謂的「搖頭結」。

作法是把線的前端穿過鼻環後再彎出一個繩圈，連同母線一起打個結。然後讓線在繩圈裡纏繞4~5准後再慢慢絞緊。總之，等於用一條線打出套索結。

最後一手壓住鼻環，拉住母線和多餘的線一起束緊。用力束緊的結果，可能會看不到結頭的形狀。第一次束緊時大約出九分力，確認自已想要的繩圈大小後再用力拉一次，然後剪掉多餘的長度。

鄧肯結的特徵是結頭可以自由移動，而且還能調繩圈的大小。所以如果突然有大魚上鉤，為了替結頭吸引負擔，繩圈會自行愈縮愈小。

The Duncan knot, while a type of free knot, isn't tied by directly connecting the metal fitting to the fishing line. Instead, it's tied relatively loosely, allowing the line and lure to maintain a few centimeters of distance from large flies. This is also known as a "slip knot."

The method involves passing the end of the line through the nose ring, then bending it into a loop and tying a knot along with the main line. Then, let the line wrap around the loop 4-5 times before slowly tightening it. Essentially, it's like tying a lasso knot with a single line.

Finally, hold down the nose ring and pull the main line and any excess line to tighten it. Tightening it forcefully might obscure the knot's shape. Apply about 90% force the first time, confirm the desired loop size, pull again, and then trim off any excess length.

The Duncan knot's characteristic is that the knot head can move freely, and the loop size can be adjusted. Therefore, if a large fish suddenly bites, the loop will automatically shrink to absorb the weight of the knot.
